Kennedy Heights Arts Center
Founded in 2003, Kennedy Heights Arts Center is an inspiring example of community engagement at its best. When developers threatened to demolish the historic Kennedy Mansion, built in 1875 by Kennedy Heights founder Lewis Kennedy, a group of citizens organized to save it. Since that time, hundreds of volunteers have worked to transform the distressed 21-room mansion and 2.5 acre grounds into a thriving, nonprofit community arts center. KHAC's mission is to enhance the life of the surrounding communities through arts and cultural experiences that embrace diversity, foster creativity and build community. The Arts Center provides a high-quality, innovative art exhibitions and programs for children and adults, including: • Rotating art exhibitions featuring a diverse mix of emerging and professional artists in our beautifully renovated gallery • Arts education classes for youth and adults in a wide range of visual arts media, video, creative writing, music and theatre • Free arts outreach programs serving at-risk youth at several public schools, public library, a group home and a large Section 8 housing complex • Multi-discipline summer arts camps for youth • Community events such as WinterFest, fall street festival, African culture fest and summer concerts on the lawn • Annual community artist-in-residence, In a Word literary arts series, various workshops and community arts projects such creating an outdoor mural.
